The concept of cost-cutting and the world’s most expensive sport seems an uneasy match, yet the gossip around the F1 circuit at the moment is that the 13 teams competing in the 2010 season will be taking part in a special launch in Valencia at the end of January.
In the past, teams have either held pre-season previews at their own factories or unveiled their new cars at one of the tests. Mercedes-Benz GP’s chief executive, Nick Fry, revealed that this new initiative was an attempt to engage with fans, who seemed to have been less than enthused by the new technologies, originally developed with the attention of capturing an even larger audience for this very high maintenance sport.
At the Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco, he stated “I don’t want to go into too much detail about what the plans actually are, but we have agreed between all the teams to do a joint launch and we do wish to turn it into a proper event”.
Experts estimate that it will take a lot of hard work for the new teams, Virgin Racing, US F1, Lotus and Campos to be ready in time but they will undoubtedly be keen to join the party, which will take place at Valencia’s Circuit Ricardo Tormo, long a favourite venue for pre-season testing.
Fry seemed keen not to let the cat out of the bag completely, hinting that the teams were receiving help from the management at Circuit Ricardo Tormo, as well as investment in communication and marketing.
“I wouldn’t wish to spill the beans on what we are going to do, but it is going to be hugely innovative. It is going to be a clear demonstration of how we are going to be working together. We are not all going off and doing our own individual launches, so we can do something that is a lot more customer friendly.”
With the F1 focus shifting from the minutiae of technical innovation in favour of creating more excitement for spectators, 2010 looks set to be an eventful year.
