Barbie
For those of you seeking a more plastic beauty, there is the “Barbie” sale at Christie’s South Kensington 26 September.
Christie’s is following up on its “Barbie-expertise” as they hold the record for a Barbie Nr 1 [see below] for GBP 2,800 in 1999.
Barbie [in the form of a white-faced brunette in a black-and-white swimsuit and sunglasses] was born in 1959 and retailed at USD 3.00. Given the GBP 2,800 paid in 1999, this reflects an annual value growth of over 46 % per annum for 40 years – a record that not even Warren Buffet can compete with!
Today, Mattel [the owners of Barbie] sell dolls etc. to an annual value of circa USD 3 billion. Barbie has become very popular and there are approximately 100,000 collectors worldwide.

Christie’s will be offering one of the most significant and complete collections of Barbie Dolls ever to come onto the market comprising some 4,000 dolls.
The collection is thought to be the largest collection in the world, spanning the entire history of Barbie, her family, friends and fashion during the second half of the 20th-century.
The sale will take Barbie fans and fashionistas alike on a fascinating journey from the very first Barbie, to limited editions, designer Barbies, Holiday Barbies and of course the infamous boyfriend Ken, right through to the more current dolls of the new millennium. The sale is estimated to realise in excess of GBP 100,000 with individual estimates starting at GBP 80.
