Originally launched in 1953, G-Plan furniture was the ultimate domestic fashion statement throughout the 1950s and 1960s and, unlike IKEA’s cheap and cheerful flatpack products, was considered the height of chic.

That was the ultimate question asked during the II Congreso Internacional Contract Madrid. Held between 5 and 6 May this year, the event represents a growing trend towards more interactive fairs and conferences in which information, networking and discussion forums take an important position. As a result, this still new phenomenon was attended by many in the broader sector, from leading architects and designers to important constructors, developers and agents.

It is said that the best publicity is free publicity and, thanks to writer and Hispanophile Jason Webster, Valencia has been the recipient of some very welcome attention recently.
Webster, whose wife Salud hails from the city, published an article in Britain’s The Guardian newspaper about Valencia’s colourful and historic El Cabanyal district, praising it as a “working-class jewel of art-nouveau design”. However, he was eager to point out to readers that, despite officially being a ‘protected historical zone’, this unique part of Valencia faces demolition as part of a scheme to extend one of the city’s avenues from the city centre to the sea.
