Riurau, a typical structure

RiurauThe riurau is a unique structure irrevocably linked to the Spanish east coast and the Jávea region of the Costa Blanca in particular. Even the name has an unmistakable local ring to it, and can only really be done justice with the rounded ‘Rs’ of authentic Valenciano pronunciation.

This unusual outbuilding, with its characteristic long arched galleries covered by Spanish roof tiles, is the product of the vibrant raisin trade that long made the Jávea area an important source of fine grade raisins and sultanas. Grown in the large, level valley as well as in the surrounding countryside, the raisins exported from Jávea’s Las Duanas port area to destinations around the world were gathered and dried in riurau that once dotted the entire area and gave it a very distinct architectural look.

Tosca – honey stone that built Jávea

xabia centre with Tosca stone buildingsWalk through the streets of the atmospheric old town of Jávea, an hour or so north of Alicante on the Spanish east coast, and you will notice a certain honey-gold glow to the buildings. Classic property in Cuesta San Antonio, Javea

One of the beautiful bedrooms of this stunnig propertyTo find a grand classical home set within its own grounds but also just a short distance from the beach at Javea is a rare thing indeed. This house in Cuesta San Antonio is exactly that, though, a grand house in the traditional style of the stately country home of the greater Valencia region. What’s more, it isn’t located in the heart of the countryside, surrounded by acres and acres of orange groves, but actually resides within the peacefully stylish confines of the most exclusive residential area in Javea.

Squaw Luna Lodge

Squaw Luna Lodge exterior at nightInspiration

While technically so in the sense that it is a wooden mountain house, you shouldn’t take the ‘lodge’ part of this property’s name too seriously. Indeed, this lovely home is named after and takes much of its inspiration from a singular piece of art sculpture that is an ode to the wonderful Squaw Valley surroundings. Currently, it enjoys a prominent position as you enter the home.
