The former banker had a career that involved travel, money and great perks, yet he gave it all up to commit himself to an entirely new calling. Rather than simply join the legions of designer wannabes, this economics and philosophy graduate really had something to say, and it’s a message that is helping to revitalise London’s luxury men’s fashion sector.

The Dior new jewellery collection is not something that one would normally associate with an upmarket label. Designed by Victoire de Castellane, official designer for Dior since 1998, this provocative collection consists of four mementos mori fashioned from jade, obsidian, opal and quartz. The crystal skulls are accessorised with white gold and diamonds.

Now that common sense has returned to the world’s economies and the days of conspicuous consumption appear to be at least suspended, if not actually a thing of the past, designer labels have shown themselves willing to respond to this new age of austerity.
