Mind games galore at the XXII Chess Tournament Villa de Xábia

Chess, the sport of mental championsChess is the sport of the mentally gifted and some great intellects were on display recently at Javea’s chess tournament. The competition was divided into four age groups: under 12s, under 14s, under 16s and adults, and with prize money and trophies on offer, a strongly competitive atmosphere prevailed.

Spain’s sporting reign continues

Spain honours its sporting starsJust when it didn’t seem possible that Spain’s run of sporting success could improve (for what could be better than winning the World Cup?) along comes yet more good news.

The German Grand Prix belonged to Ferrari as teammates Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso jockeyed for position. With the help of some poorly disguised instructions from a Ferrari engineer, Alonso overtook Massa and sped to victory. The team has already received a hefty fine and it will be some weeks before Alonso’s win is secure, but there is no doubt that the Spaniard dominated the race. In fifth spot and currently trailing Lewis Hamilton by 34 points, Alonso will have to keep up the pressure to win another championship but, as F1 fanatics say, nothing is certain until the final race is over.Continue reading…Spain’s sporting reign continues

Pepe Gancedo: the power of concept

As a designer of golf courses across Spain and beyond, Pepe Gancedo stands out for his thoughtful approach…

Foressos Golf

A lot of course designers these days seem to work to a branded concept – flying in to recce the terrain in question but generally designing golf courses in a rather templated form that they call their signature style. A course for players

Foressos Golf - a picturesque courseForessos Golf is a bit of a rarity these days; a golf course that is…just that. Not lined with homes or buildings of any description or set within the midst of an urbanisation, this is a true blue course that has rapidly become a player’s favourite. Keen to claim this course built purely for golfers, they have been snapping up the club’s golf memberships.

World Cup players kick off about the ball

The controversial Jabulani ballThe World Cup had scarcely got under way before many of the players started to complain about the tournament’s chosen football. Made by Adidas, the Jabulani (which means ‘rejoice’ in Zulu) was developed by a specialist team at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, U.K.

The central problem, at least as far as some of the players are concerned, is that the ridges on its skin cause it to ‘bend’, creating some confusion for the goalies. England’s David James has already said, “The ball is dreadful. It’s horrible…” although he did acknowledge, “it’s horrible for everyone.” Coach Fabio Capello even went so far as to suggest that it behaved differently at altitude than at sea level.
