In order to get this historic race off to a flying start Laird Hamilton, famous surfer and paddle boarder and Puma Ocean Race partner, rode on the Mar Mostro until the starting gun was fired, at which point he jumped ship and was picked up by a further vessel bearing his customised PUMA-Laird paddleboard. Laird then paddle boarded out to sea in the wake of the race competitors.

It usually takes place off the beach but can be enjoyed on lakes and other bodies of water, as long as they are big enough.
