When King Felipe III of Spain granted Jávea town rights on 2 July 1612 he probably didn’t imagine that it would still give cause for a full season of celebrations in the 21st century. If so, he would have underestimated the pride local people continue have in their town and its origins and traditions. What’s more, given the Spanish penchant for celebrations and festivities an event such as a 400th anniversary is something that fires the imagination.

Science Magazine, one of the world’s most influential periodicals on the subject, recently nominated its Top 10 Scientific Discoveries of 2011, of which three emerged from Spanish research.
The much-heralded vaccine against malaria was developed in Spain along with the surprising discovery that human beings can be divided into types according to their intestinal flora, in a manner similar to the divisions drawn by blood grouping. Previously it was thought that each person’s intestinal flora was unique.

Amid all the doom and gloom out there we are really happy to be able to report on some positive and indeed encouraging news. It comes in the form of the official figures released on tourism numbers for 2011, which show an increase in arrivals of 7,7% over 2010, culminating in a total of 56 million visitors last year.

Strolling through the restaurant district just off the Granvia Marqués del Turia, in the centre of Valencia, we finally found the Mercatbar while actually looking for another restaurant. Since Quique Dacosta’s Mercatbar was very much on our ‘to-do’ list we were happy to abandon our original plans and give this very Spanish interpretation of the deli-cum-gastro-bar concept a try.

Based in Ribarroja in the province of Valencia, Verdifresh was founded in 2000 in answer to Mercadona’s need for a reliable supplier of fresh vegetables for use in pre-packed but unprocessed salads, soups and other convenience dishes.
At a time when construction, finance, IT and many of the other economic staples of recent times are suffering severe contractions it is good to note that there are still sectors out there that are showing impressive growth. The fact that some of the most successful drivers of growth are in the Valencia region, and that they focus on sustainable industries such as agriculture, makes it even better news.

Thanks to astonishing performances by Jávea-born David Ferrer and an unwell Rafael Nadal, Spain won the 2011 Davis Cup battle for the fourth time in seven years.
