Off anywhere beyond the usual radius of a road trip, and you’ll know the score. Turn up at the airport three hours early, hope your ticketless pre-booked flight actually features on the computer at the check-in counter, fret in case your luggage is too heavy, too big or contains anything remotely liquid – and then settle in for some fun queuing followed by the stylish spectacle that is the security check. Whip off your belt, take off your shoes, your watch, your jacket, then get shouted at for forgetting to also remove your mobile phone whilst simultaneously being frisked and told to get all that gear back on your person in under a minute.

As residents will no doubt agree, there is always something interesting happening in Javea. With so many chances throughout the year to enjoy all the usual outdoor activities like sailing and hiking in the beautiful surroundings of the Montgó National Park, there need never be a dull moment.

When visiting Valencia it’s impossible not to notice the huge paella dishes occupying pride of place on a myriad restaurant tables. This popular valenciano dish is a particular lunchtime favourite with Spanish locals, although those who are serious about their paella like to impose their own quality control, purchasing ingredients at Valencia’s bustling Mercado Central and taking them home to be cooked in the well seasoned family paella pan.

There was a time when Valencia was linked to the Silk Route. Back in the early middle ages, when it was part of Moorish Spain, the city was an important transhipment point into which silk and other treasures from the East were imported and re-exported to markets across Northern Europe. This trade brought great wealth to the Mediterranean port city, a boon further bolstered by the fact that many of the raw materials brought here spawned an industry of craftsmen, jewellers and tailors whose products sold far and wide.
