Château Lamothe du Prince Noir

The fabulous Château Lamothe du Prince Noir is situated not only in the heart of Bordeaux’s famous vineyards but also at the heart of the Aquitaine region’s history. If these elegant walls, hewn out of local honey-coloured stone, could talk, what a tale they would tell. Centuries of history, from early Celts and conquering Romans to knights, chevaliers and revolutionaries, passed through this grand estate, which these days exudes such an air of peace and grace.

Everything about the Château speaks of breeding and tradition, from the stately palace and grounds to the spring-fed moat. It is also believed that the infamous Black Prince lived here, leaving today’s guests to ponder if they might be in the very room where he once roamed. Still privately owned, the château has been tastefully maintained and restored, and features a small but highly exclusive hotel with superb service and, of course, cuisine.

In a region like this, surrounded as it is by the wine-growing regions of Bordeaux, fine wine and good food are at the top of the list. Wine has been grown in this fertile land since time immemorial, and with a setting close to St Émilion the local pedigree is among the highest in the country. Though the once famous vineyards of the estate stopped production after the First World War, there is a sweet white Sauterne that carries the name, and continues the tradition of one of the finest of châteaux.
