After all the twists and turns, with Schumacher returning to the sport and then not, the impending ban on the Renault F1 team following an incident at the Hungarian GP in July would have left the European GP in Valencia without its star attraction. Now, the event and indeed the sport, has received a much-needed boost with the news that the ban on Renault has been revoked and Spanish motor racing hero Fernando Alonso will be performing in this ‘home’ race. He will also be pairing up with Romain Grosjean for the first time. The Frenchman replaces Renault’s Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet jr and is set for a F1 debut in Valencia.
The news that Spain’s double world champion will be lining up in Valencia has had an immense effect, with all individual tickets for Sunday’s race now snatched up. Sales were originally sluggish, but now only tickets for Friday and Saturday’s practice, and for 3-day packages are still available, ensuring that the European GP at the street circuit of Valencia will be a grand event after all.
