Great Projects 2010-2011

Madrid's IFEMA complex was thronged with visitorsRimontgó boss José Ribes Bas, David Mor and José Martinez Medina, the creative man behind leading office and home furniture designers JMM, attended the conference entitled Grandes Proyectos 2010-2011 as part of a two-day workshop in Madrid’s international IFEMA conference complex.

This section of the II Congreso Internacional del Contract y la Arquitectura was dedicated specifically to the latest movements in design, be it in styling, technology or indeed the managing of projects and the resulting interaction with other professionals. As a result, it was of specific interest to José Martinez Medina, whose range of JMM branded office and home furnishing systems have attracted praise from industrial designers and architects to retailers and, most importantly, end-users.

Among the many attendees were such notable figures in Spanish architectural circles as Rafael de La-Hoz, Carlos Lamela and Pedro Baltar, each with an enviable portfolio of high-profile projects and accolades to their name. Among the many topics addressed during the conference was the need for creativity and innovation to blossom in a field that so depends on its ability to reach beyond established expectations.

In this, it was agreed, the continued stream of young talent remains as important as ever, perhaps even more so. “Young people bring fresh talent, original perspectives and the ability to redefine and rejuvenate a field such architecture at challenging times,” said César Luiz-Larrea. It was an encouraging endorsement to receive from such a seasoned and well-respected professional, a sentiment voiced by Esaú Acosta Pérez, one of the young architects in question. He underlined this sense of change by adding: “The idea of knowledge and know-how as something that can be held by one out of few is changing. Information is becoming ever more readily available, which in reality means that it is increasingly collective. These days it is harder and harder to be the all-knowing professional, also because projects are becoming more interdisciplinary, involving more diverse skill sets and resultantly bringing more ‘knowledgeable’ people into the process of a particular project.”

From the point of view of the designer, architect or project manager, therefore, this requires interaction with people such as electronics and software specialists, marketing experts and environmental assessors to name but a few. It’s a brave new world in which architects and designers talk about more than new aesthetic movements alone…
