Although nothing can really compare with the thrill of seeing a movie in a real cinema, we are increasingly relying on DVDs to keep us up to date with the latest Hollywood blockbusters.
For those of us who prefer classic movies, our homes are often the only place where we can watch the films that we fell in love with years ago. The death of the independent cinema has meant that variety has all too frequently been sacrificed, with countrywide chains screening the same offerings whether you’re living in Manchester, Manhattan or Madrid.
If your idea of heaven is settling down to an evening of Truffaut or Kubrick and would prefer not to watch Les Quatre Cents Coups or 2001: A Space Odyssey on a screen the size of a postage stamp, there is a solution. While Hollywood movie moguls have considered a private screening room de rigueur for almost a century, it is only comparatively recently that similar equipment has been available to ordinary families. Yet, now the home cinema revolution has arrived it’s almost impossible to remember the time when our horizons extended only as far as watching last week’s episode of Dynasty or Dallas on VCR.
Ideally we should all enjoy a place where the joys of cinema are appreciated in their proper setting on equipment that has very little in common with our compulsive devouring of TV soap operas and 24-hour news channels. What’s more, it’s the perfect place for friends and family to come together and enjoy a shared interest.
