Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology

Indiana Jones exhibitionHow do you create interest in a subject that, at first appearance, might seem a little dry and dusty? Well, one sure-fire way to do it is to position it at the heart of a Hollywood blockbuster that is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Harrison Ford!

Ever since the Indiana Jones franchise hit the cinemas, the previously sedate academic subject of archaeology has undergone a renaissance, with students signing up in the hope of covering themselves with a little bit of that Indy stardust.

Now an interactive exhibition at the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum in Valencia’s famous City of Arts and Sciences has gathered together an impressive collection of material from the Indiana Jones movies in order to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of this highly successful franchise.

Incorporating a massive area of 900 square metres, the exhibition is a multimedia and interactive adventure that will take visitors on a journey to the heart of Indiana Jones’s world. To add to the authenticity of the whole experience, an appearance by Indy himself – actor Harrison Ford – will welcome participants and set the scene.

Headpiece to the Staff of RaIndiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology will delve into myths associated with relics such as the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail and explore legendary places like Akator and Mayapore. The exhibition will also shed light on how archaeologists work on real projects.

Apart from a lot of the models and props that were used in the four Indiana Jones movies, the exhibition will also feature important artefacts loaned by the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The National Geographic Society has also donated photos, videos, artefacts and materials from its considerable archive.

This fascinating tribute to the skill and knowledge of the archaeologists who uncovered the secrets of the distant past opened in December 2011 and will run until 16th of September 2012 at the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum.
