Jávea, at the northern extension of the Costa Blanca, forms the heart of Spain’s Mediterranean coastline. Once a traditional walled Spanish town with a small harbour from which oranges and other produce was exported, Jávea’s old historic centre remains a delightful maze of cobbled streets, intimate squares and classical architecture.
Situated on the northern edge of the beautiful Jalón river valley, which runs at a right angle from the mountains to the sea, the old town looks across a valley of orchards towards the southern mountain range that frames the river. This area, with its pine-covered slopes, meets the sea through a series of spectacular cliffs and capes.
It is here, ensconced within tree-covered residential areas, that exclusive villa suburbs back on to some of the most stunning scenery in the Mediterranean, as cliffs, coves and the shoreline stretching out into the open sea form the backdrop to everyday life. From nearby Cap de la Nao, the easternmost point on the Spanish mainland, you can even see the island of Ibiza on clear days.
The most spectacular mountain, however, is the Montgó, the northern range that runs along the back of the old town and juts out to sea in a dramatic gesture that frames the little harbour and marina of Jávea’s beachside town. A picturesque favourite with water sports enthusiasts, this little seaside village looks out over a bay set between the north and south ranges, and traced by a sweeping stretch of sandy beach.
High up against the Montgó are some of the most stunning properties in the region; luxury villas boasting magnificent views, architectural styling and a long list of modern luxuries. Nearby are such facilities as private schools, golf courses, luxury spa hotels, racket clubs and yacht harbours serving sailing, diving and a host of other water sports.
The scenic beauty, fine climate, nearby countryside and the standard of facilities explain the popularity of this region with both rich and famous Spaniards and other Europeans. High-speed train connections and international airports at Valencia and Alicante (under an hour by car) add to the accessibility of a region that blends many of the finest elements in one.
