When visiting Javea you should take the opportunity to visit the famous Molinos de la Plana. Constructed in the 17th century, these old windmills once performed a vital service to residents of Javea – especially the town’s bakers – by grinding grain into flour.
Bearing in mind the main function of these unusual structures, which now lacking their characteristic sails, give the appearance of being lookout posts. If this were the case their position, overlooking the sea at Cabo San Antonio, would be absolutely perfect, however the important factor here is wind power.
Javea has the largest concentration of windmills in the Marina Alta district, a not particularly surprising fact given the strength of the wind, yet this is a remarkably beautiful part of the Costa Blanca and well worth the drive out of town both to see the windmills and enjoy some spectacular views of the Mediterranean.
