After the dramatic news of Michael Schumacher’s return to F1 had fans and sport pundits enthralled, we now learn that he will not, after all, be getting back into a Ferrari this season. While nothing is ruled out for next year, the news puts a damper on what was promising to be quite a mid-season turnaround.
In an official statement and on his personal website ‘Schumi’ explained the reason for his stepping down was a failed medical examination. Neck injuries sustained while racing a motorbike earlier in the year appear not to have healed sufficiently to enable the seven-time world champion to withstand the extreme G force pressures of a Formula One cockpit.
It is bad news for Formula One fans, and in particular for the organisers of the European Grand Prix in Valencia. Scheduled for 23 August, this city race was going to be the scene of Schumacher’s comeback. This prospect alone saw 10,000 tickets being sold within days of his original announcement, and now, with Spanish F1 hero Fernando Alonso possibly out due to a Renault team ban, many Spanish motor-racing enthusiasts will feel severely let down. Could things get any crazier?
