Opera legend Plácido Domingo will return to Palau de les Arts Reina SofÃa to perform Oreste in Gluck’s opera Iphigénie en Tauride, a co-production between the Seattle Opera and the Metropolitan Opera which will be premiered the 3rd December.
After his successful debut in the valencian opera in the role of Cyrano in Franco Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac, opera lovers have once again the chance to listen Domingo, who is considered the greatest tenor of all time.
Lithuanian soprano Violeta Urmana will play her role debut in Valencia as Iphigénie after the superb critics for her Kundry performance in Palau de les Arts production of Wagner’s Parsifal. Iphigénie en Tauride cast will also include such as prestigious singers as tenor Ismale Jordi, bass Riccardo Zanellato and sopran Amparo Navarro. French director Patrick Fournillier will conduct Palau de les Arts acclaimed orchestra while Stephen Wadsworth will be in charge of the stage direction.
Iphigénie en Tauride relates the story of Iphigénie, who is saved from sacrifice by goddess Diana. Goddess Diana will send her to Tauride where Iphigénie will serve as priestess for the Scythians. Once in Tauride Iphigénie will meet her brother Orestes, who she must sacrifice. Brotherhood will be stronger than must and she will set him free. The libretto was written by Nicolas-François Guillard after Guymond de la Touche’s Iphigénie en Tauride, which was based on Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides.
Iphigénie en Tauride will be also performed on December 9th, 13th, 15th and 18th.
