This summer the city of Valencia proudly showcases one of its most talented architects with an exhibition at the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern on Ramón Esteve, the youthful designer who has earned his name among the creative geniuses that have helped to shape this city in one form or another.
In a city like this, so dedicated to architecture and taste, it is no small honour. Esteve forms part of a rich heritage that includes the likes of José Antonio Coderch, Alejandro de la Sota, Antonio Escario, Ignacio Carbonell and the internationally famous Santiago Calatrava. His reputation is built simply and solidly on a body of work that is both large and diverse – drawing the eye with its sensual forms, engaging the mind with its clever functionality and feeding the spirit with its strong conceptual depth.
His approach is consistent yet adaptable, malleable to the needs of the project in hand, be it a luxury villa, a corporate headquarters, a public space or a range of outdoor furniture. For Esteve the essence behind design lies in the interaction between need and nurture. “A chair is as much for our eyes as for our backs, a house as much an emotional home as a physical, practical one.” The harmonising of these elements, always linked to setting and geographical context, are the tasks he sets himself as an architect.
Consistency in diversity
The exhibition, which runs until 2nd October this year, illustrates the rich variety of his work, showcasing completed projects involving hospitals, schools, villas, medical clinics, conference centres, scientific research facilities, offices, libraries, cultural centres, industrial design and even a church. Despite the widely diverse uses, scales, locations and indeed styles reflected in such a diverse oeuvre, the continuum between them is in the mastery of geometry, volume and space.
Like all great architects, Ramón Esteve has a way of using natural elements such as light, air and views to do much of the work for him, manipulating them to create an architectural language that is at once clean, pacific and yet imposing. Those who enjoy high-end design and inspiring architecture will enjoy the art of architecture on display at the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern until 2nd October 2010.
Rimontgó has a property designed by Ramón Esteve on its books.
