The Plaza, one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, is often referred to as a work of art rather than a piece of real estate. However, with Plaza hotels in both New York and Paris one important question remains – which is more desirable?
New York’s Plaza is the most remarkable hotel in the city and – by extension – the United States. Constructed over a century ago at the crossroads between Central Park and Fifth Avenue, its vintage edifice provides a charming contrast with New York’s more contemporary architecture. With a total of 282 rooms (including 152 suites) this grand old hotel is now hoping to welcome a new generation of international visitors.
Bought in 1988 for over 400 million dollars, it was re-sold 18 years later for 675 million. A recent 400 million dollar renovation has restored this gem to its former glory, as befits a landmark building that is as much part of the city’s topography as the Empire State Building or Central Park.
The hotel offers services designed to meet the needs of the most demanding and fastidious client. It includes boutiques, gymnasiums, beauty salons and two restaurants, The Oak Room and The Rose Club, in which guests can experience menus that are epicurean fantasies – and why not enjoy a pre or post dinner drink at one of the Plaza’s three bars?
Additionally you can currently purchase your very own Luxury Condo Suite in the Plaza New York.
The Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris more than lives up to its New York counterpart. Located on the exclusive Avenue Montaigne, only minutes from the Champs Elysées, and surrounded by boutiques selling brands such as Valentino and Louis Vuitton to name but two, the Hôtel Plaza Athénée has been a representation of Parisian glamour since 1911. Recently renovated, the hotel contains 191 rooms and 45 suites, with a total staff of 520.
Alain Ducasse, the world-famous chef, is in charge of the hotel’s five restaurants, which range from classic French cuisine to al fresco dining and vegetarian menus. The establishment’s most famous bar is the Bar du Plaza Athénée, a magnificent glass structure designed by Patrick Jouin, a protégé of Philippe Starck, that provides a unique setting, not to mention some very futuristic cocktails. Two further bars, situated outside the hotel at strategic points of the city, represent la vie Parisienne at its finest and are the ideal locations for a romantic rendezvous.
Two fine hotels, one very difficult choice…
