Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia declared Patrimonio de la Humanidad by UNESCO

The fourth meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage took place in Abu Dhabi from September 28th to October 2nd under the chairmanship of Awadh Ali Saleh Al Musabi of the UAE.

With 111 candidates presented for consideration, the committee had to undertake a considerable amount of work to decide which of the claims deserved UNESCO’s special status.

The Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia made its presentation in conjunction with the Consejo de Hombres Buenos de Murcia. Both are organisations that keep alive the traditional culture of Spain by providing just, democratic self-government in the management of water resources for the local communities that rely on this vital commodity for the maintenance of their crops and fields.

In the event their bid was successful and Spain was particularly commended for its efforts in maintaining and promoting its cultural heritage in the face of extreme pressure from the modern world.

Other countries that were awarded special status by UNESCO include China for its calligraphy, Mexico for its breathtaking and terrifying Ceremonia del Voladores and Colombia for its lively Carnaval de Negros y Blancos.
