City abodes are popular for a wide variety of reasons ranging from career opportunities, entertainment, culture, nightlife and indeed the sheer excitement that large centres can offer. But even within this lifestyle there are great variations and different experiences to be had depending on the city, suburb and indeed the type of property in question.
Valencia and New York are good examples, each offering the classic buzz of cosmopolitan city life, yet with a distinctive character and ambience of their own. If you were to move to New York and want to make the most of the opportunity, then famous addresses around Central Park or in districts such as the Upper East Side would come to mind. This is the domain of some of the most magnificently opulent and impressive penthouse pads in the world, overlooking famous Central Park or the Hudson River.
Such abodes are intended for the particularly well-heeled, but even at a slightly lower budget you can still live the New York experience. Greenwich Village is the obvious bohemian district, but there are others, such as West Village, where stylish cafés, boutiques and theatres combine with beautifully renovated 19th century apartment buildings to reveal a gentler side to this great city. Murray Hill retains this old-worldly atmosphere too, while classic NY loft living is the name of the game in up-and-coming Tribeca – characterised by large open living spaces, stylish industrial décor notes and panoramic windows that let the New York skyline in.
Where New York lofts create a private breathing space within the fast-paced city, Valencia offers an altogether more relaxed option. Here, where classical European refinement and Mediterranean lifestyle mingle happily, the place to be is on one of the grand leafy boulevards that dissect the heart of town. Their magnificent edifices in local Art Nouveau style house stately apartments many of which have been sumptuously renovated to combine period craftsmanship and modern comforts. The Gran Via is a particularly fine example, with luxury boutiques, cafés and restaurants, though the streets off it are filled with the ambience of typical bars, eateries and outdoor dining.
Stroll in the opposite direction and you come to the historic heart of the city, where architectural eras reveal themselves before you in close succession, and daytime shoppers are replaced by people of all ages out for a stroll, a meal or a drink on the plaza. So will it be a spacious, modernist loft in the midst of New York bustle or a chic apartment on a leafy boulevard in lively Valencia? What a dilemma to have.
