Multiple Motorcycle World Champion, Jorge Martínez, is one of the most successful competitors in motorcycle racing history. His nickname ‘Aspar’, is derived from a Spanish link with the shoe making industry, as his father worked as a cobbler (“aspardanyer” in the Valencian language) . He entered his first Grand Prix in 1982, and went on to claim a total of four World Championships in both the 80cc and the 125cc categories.
Jorge Martínez Aspar himself is from Alzira in Valencia, and from the beginning his dream was to create a world class racing circuit in the region. Sure enough, after years of hard work and dogged determination, in 1999 the circuit Ricardo Tormo opened in Cheste (Valencia). The 75 million euro project, which also includes a youth programme, was backed by the local government and business community.
In 1992, while still at the peak of his career, Aspar created his own team – The Aspar Racing Team, which is currently competing in three categories, the MotoGP, Moto 2 and the 125cc World Championships. It is now one of the largest and most successful teams in the world.
Power Electronics is the 2012 sponsor of the Aspar team in MotoGP. This company is a Spanish manufacturer of electronic equipment, based in Valencia. The squad will be officially known as the ‘Power Electronics Aspar Team’. Aspar is switching from Ducati to Aprilia CRT machinery for its third year in the premier-class, when it will also expand its line-up to two new riders, having signed Randy de Puniet and Aleix Espargaro.
Jorge Martinez Aspar is confident that having the support of a major multinational company will guarantee success and will reinforce the team’s image worldwide.
