This year marks the 200th anniversary of this imaginative writer’s birth, and the people of Jávea are eager to join in the celebrations. The months of October and November will be dedicated to a number of events guaranteed to attract anyone with even the most casual interest in this much loved author, whose own life has been dissected almost as much as the plots and characters of his remarkable novels.
From 31 August to 15 September this year Sueca will be the scene of the annual Fiesta del Arroz, a veritable feast for lovers of food, fun and culture. Situated along the coastline just south of Valencia, this town of around 25,000 people borders the Natural Park of La Albufera, a wetland area known for its waterways, its birdlife and above all, for being one of the two most important rice growing regions in Europe.
This summer the Alicante street scene has been enlivened with the chic appearance of the Calessino, a rickshaw taxi service that uses specially adapted retro-style Vespa three wheelers to relive classic Mediterranean Dolce Vita in this iconic seaside city. Combining style with fun, the Calessino offer a great way to see the city in a manner that is comfortable but also interactive. Shaded and cool yet open-air, the ride allows you to feel and experience the city you’re driving through, catching the aroma of the market and coffee shops as you gently whiz past.
If you are a shopaholic and happen to be in Jávea in the Costa Blanca on Wednesday August 8th, then there is good news, since the town’s trade association has organised another late night shopping evening. The last such event held in July, was such a massive success that shopkeepers reported a 50 per cent increase in sales, so naturally there was a great deal of interest in participating in August’s retail fiesta. In order to make the whole occasion feel more festive, the streets will be buzzing with little extras, such as a display of classic and vintage motorbikes in the Placeta del Convent. The bars and restaurants in the area will be organising a tapas trail for hungry shoppers, who are invited to enjoy the variety of local stores, which will remain open until midnight.
Fortunately for lovers of this perennially popular musical genre, the town’s jazz fest has managed to escape the economic cuts that have affected so many similar events all over Europe. This year’s XII Jávea Festival will take place from Saturday 4th August until Monday 6th August at 22.30hrs each night in the town’s picturesque Plaza de la Constitución.
Summer’s here and the beach is the place to be. Jávea’s Arenal beach is probably the town’s most popular location throughout the summer, so to encourage families to spend the whole day enjoying all that it has to offer, Councillor Tere Bisquert of the Department of Youth has organised a programme of films, designed to keep the whole family happy.
An important new archaeological exhibition has opened in Jávea showing the findings from a remote cave in the Montgó mountains.
The remains of bodies buried in the cave have been carbon dated to 4,683 years ago. This means the cave was a burial ground during the Chalcolithic era, the period after the Neolithic age also known as the Copper age.
